The AHO has recently completed the construction of another large home funded through the Closing the Gap program. The home features five bedrooms, 2 and half bathrooms, large living areas, modern kitchen, solar and air-conditioning. The Western Sydney home will be managed by Tharawal Housing Aboriginal Corporation and will soon be tenanted to an Aboriginal family.
Property titles for approximately 3,325 homes, tenanted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will be transferred to the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) from the Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC), starting on 25 May 2023.
All eligible homes within the program will be transferred to the AHO by August 2024 across multiple tranches.
Tenancy management will remain with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).
In September the AHO handed over a newly constructed property in Whalan in Western Sydney. This large property features a four-bedroom home with two and half bathrooms; plus a two-bedroom granny flat with its own bathroom. Both have solar and air-conditioning. There are landscaped gardens, large comfortable living areas, a double lock-up garage and a carport. The property will be managed by Birribee Housing.
Keeping Aboriginal culture at the centre
The AHO Aboriginal Cultural Framework underpins our commitment to placing Aboriginal culture at the centre of everything that the AHO does. Elements of the framework includes:
Partnering with Stolen Generations Organisations for improved housing outcomes
The AHO recently agreed to host a housing roundtable as part of its commitments with the Stolen Generations Advisory Committee. The Stolen Generations Advisory Committee was established to support the implementation of the NSW Government Response to ‘Unfinished Business’, Unfinished Business, a NSW Standing Committee report on an inquiry into Stolen Generations reparations.
The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) is releasing the new Aboriginal Community Housing Rent Policy (ACHRP).
The New South Wales Government has announced a $2.8 billion housing package which is about laying the foundation for inclusive, sustainable housing for NSW now and into the future.
Within the package there are significant funding elements to support the work of the AHO, including Phase Two of the Strong Family Strong Communities strategy and Closing the Gap Housing Solutions.
We asked some of our Tertiary Accommodation Grant (TAG) recipients to share their experience of receiving the grant. Meet Bobby, Amelia, David and Lacey.
