Established in 1998, the NSW Aboriginal Housing Office has four main priorities - to develop a viable Aboriginal housing sector, increase focus on asset management, increase access to safe, affordable and culturally appropriate housing and promote employment opportunities for Aboriginal people within the sector.

::: Aboriginal Housing Summit
NSW Aboriginal Housing Office will be holding an Aboriginal Housing Summit on 9th September 2008 and 10 year Anniversary Celebration dinner at the Citigate Sydney. The main themes of the Summit will be the AHO’s Sector Strengthening Strategy including Regional Aboriginal Housing Management Services, Service Improvement and Accreditation, and will include discussion on the future challenges for the NSW Aboriginal Housing. ::: 2009 Registration Process
The AHO is now calling for 2009 Registration of Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHPs) for the 2009/2010 funding cycle.

Current Registration with the AHO allows ACHPs to:
  • be eligible for funding for housing related activities
  • be considered for assistance with costs to attend AHO activities
  • be considered as a Registered Organisation when dealing with the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT)
  • receive an annual Registration Certificate.

The Call for 2009 Registration has been advertised in the following newspapers: the Koori Mail, Daily Telegraph, National Indigenous Times, Wentworth Courier, South Coast Register (Nowra), Dubbo Daily Liberal, Northern Daily Leader (Tamworth) and Coffs Harbour Advocate. The overall Aboriginal housing budget of $92.8 million for 2008/09 includes an allocation of $66.6 million to the AHO under the NSW Housing Policy and Assistance Program.

::: NSW Standards for Governance and Management of Aboriginal Housing
The AHO and the NSW Aboriginal housing sector achieved a national first in the development of governance and management standards specifically designed for the Aboriginal housing sector of NSW.

The standards establish the type and quality of services expected of an Aboriginal housing organisation, and are designed to be used in the Service Improvement System and one outcome of this system is Accreditation.

::: Housing Scholarship for NSW Youth
Applications have opened for a unique Housing NSW scholarship program that encourages disadvantaged students in public, community and aboriginal housing to stay in school and reach their full educational potential. The program will award 100 students with $2000 each to spend on their educational needs.
 
Application forms are available on the Housing NSW website www.housing.nsw.gov.au and close on August 1 2008.

Housing NSW and NSW Human Service Agencies, including the Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO), have developed an Accord to assist social housing clients with support needs, assist clients of human service agencies with housing needs and reduce social disadvantage in larger public housing estates.
