Arts & Culture
The Tamworth region is home to an exciting array of tourist, cultural and community experiences. The Tamworth Regional Gallery offers an ever changing smorgasbord of artistic experiences. The Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music regularly showcases the talent of our local musicians. The Tamworth Regional Library holds regular book readings, author visits, and a food and literature program that tempts the tastebuds as well as the mind.
The Tamworth region also plays host to a number of community festivals, events and market days, most notably the Tamworth Country Music Festival. A must see is the iconic Golden Guitar.
Aboriginal Culture
The traditional owners of the Tamworth region are the Kamilaroi people.
Each year, Tamworth Regional Council hosts a number of activities relating to Aboriginal culture. These include a formal flag raising ceremony each May to celebrate Reconciliation Week . The event takes place at the Coledale Community Centre, and is attended by local politicians, schools and community members.
The ceremony includes speeches from a Tamworth Regional Council Councillor, a local indigenous school student and an Aboriginal elder, with entertainment provided by an indigenous group.
Council also works with the Tamworth Aboriginal Inter-Agency to organise an annual NAIDOC Family Day in July, to celebrate NAIDOC Week .
The event includes a street parade, a flag raising ceremony and cultural activities.
Around 1,000 people attend each year, enjoying a free barbecue lunch, performances from local entertainers, local artists selling their works and children’s rides.
