Housing Information
Our Vision:
All Aboriginal people living in NSW will have access to appropriate, affordable, quality housing.
The NSW Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) was established in July 1998 to provide affordable housing to Aboriginal people in a culturally appropriate manner. It was set up following extensive consultation with Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHP) and Aboriginal tenants.
The AHO provides funding support to the Aboriginal Housing Sector for the purpose of carrying out operational and management services to ACHPs and acquisition/construction of properties.
To be eligible to receive funding ACHPs need to be registered with the AHO as per Section 26 of the Aboriginal Housing Act 1998. ACHPs are also required to meet specific criterion such as:
- be assessed as low risk;
- be eligible for funding in relation to management capacity and compliance in line with the NSW Aboriginal Housing Standards; and
- meet a minimum of six (6) mandatory key performance indicators along with one (1) non-mandatory key performance indicator.

Tenants of AHO properties are entitled to purchase their homes under the AHO/IBA Home Ownership Scheme.

The AHO works with a number of Government and non-Government partners, such as the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Housing NSW, FaHCSIA, Aboriginal Affairs and community leaders to meet the housing needs of Aboriginal people in NSW.
