New South Wales Government Family & Community Services - Aboriginal Housing Office

Our work

The Aboriginal Housing Office (AHO) works to provide an increased range of housing choices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, especially for those most in need and financially unable to gain access to the private rental market.

This requires effective strategies to assist in the supervision of the Indigenous community housing sector throughout the state, with a range of policies and programs in areas such as:

  • Resource-allocation,
  • Finance,
  • Strategic planning, and
  • the monitoring of outcomes and performance.

Our aim is to break the cycle of disadvantage for Aboriginal social housing tenants by delivering fit for purpose, client focused services in places where they are needed, when they are needed.

We also manage a substantial annual capital works program in order to build new community housing properties and maintain existing stock.

Our functions are guided by the principles of self-determination and self-management for Aboriginal people. We seek to assist in the management of tenanted properties and community housing organisations by developing the skillsets of Aboriginal staff and volunteers in the sector, along with employment and training opportunities.

Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHP)

The AHO works in partnership with Aboriginal Community Housing Providers (ACHP), which are usually not-for-profit or volunteer organisations exclusively serving the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The range of housing services provided by registered ACHPs includes:

  • crisis accommodation
  • transitional housing
  • social housing
  • co-operative housing
  • affordable housing, and
  • home-ownership programs.

The Aboriginal Housing Act 1998 (NSW) requires all ACHPs to be registered with the AHO in order to be an approved provider and receive assistance from the AHO.

Registration is a performance-based process that recognises well-performing providers and encourages them to have strong and professional management systems in place.

The AHO provides funding for the supply of operational and management services to ACHPs, as well as for the acquisition and construction of properties on their behalf.
